It may sound funny, but at times my clients have called me in the midnight for helping him with soundproofing a cardboard box.

After all, in any business, all the strategies and marketing start with the clients and also, ends with the clients.

So, following the thumb rule, I dig a bit more into the requirement, and the thing that I found out gave me a completely different emotion.

My client's son had a summer project in his school, and the project was "soundproof a cardboard box", and he wants my help.

Well, I politely asked him, "Was it so urgent that you need to call me at midnight?".

He gave me an inquisitive smile which I can still remember.

Anyways, jokes apart, let's dive deep into the topic without any further ado.

Soundproofing cardboard is a very simple and easy DIY project.

You'll need a few tools for this project.

Wait!

I'm not gonna take any shortcut, I'll explain everything the way, you wanna know:)

So, keep reading...

How to Soundproof a Cardboard Box

1. Choose the right materials and tools

It goes without saying that for any project, first and foremost, we need to make a list of things that we'll require for the project.

And, this project is no different.

So, here I'm with the list of products that you'll need for your DIY project.
You can other tools as well, but these are the tools that I recommend based on my experience in this field.

2. Get a Cardboard Box

Until and unless you require a massive cardboard box, I wouldn't recommend you behind making a cardboard box.

The best thing you can do is to find cardboard of the required size from your local store.

However, if you're one of those guys who loves the DIY way, then definitely make a cardboard box of your own.

It will be fun and an idiosyncratic experience as well.

I'm attaching a self-explanatory video for your reference.

Even for making cardboard box on your own, you'll need cardboard sheets.

You can buy these cardboard sheets from e-commerce websites.

3. Planning the Insulation

Before this box, you need to be ready with the cardboard box.

For the insulation process, I'll be using Styrofoam.

Styrofoam is cost-effective, and it will also add density to the cardboard box.

Take the measurement of the cardboard from inside. Then, cut the Styrofoam accordingly.

Consider 12 pieces of styrofoam if the box is small or mid-sized.

However, you can consider 24 pieces of styrofoam in case the cardboard box is quite big.

If your requirement is to leave one side open, then consider the pieces of styrofoam accordingly.

4. Install Styrofoam Sheets

For this process, you will need an adhesive named " 3M Styrofoam Spray Adhesive". (check the current price on Amazon)

I'm assuming that you're ready with the pieces of the styrofoam.

So, moving forward, you'll need to glue the sides of the cardboard with the 3M Styrofoam spray.

Once you've applied the adhesive, leave the surface of the cardboard as it is for a few seconds.

Now, place the Styrofoam sheets over the walls of your cardboard box.

5. Apply Sound Deadening Materials

Get ready with these sound deadening materials for this step.

The soundproof materials will be applied to the first layer of the Styrofoam, similar to the previous step.

I'll recommend to first place a single layer of Styrofoam sheet, and check the outcome.

If the desired output isn't achieved, then you can add one more layer of Styrofoam sheets over the sound deadening materials that you have placed over the first layer.

The second will act as a sound barrier for soundproofing materials.

Not only it will add density to the cardboard, but also dampen the echoes produced inside the box.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Can I Use Egg Cartons to Soundproof a Cardboard Box?

Egg cartons can't block the noise. However, egg cartons can absorb noise to some extent.

Since we're interested in soundproofing, so egg cartons can't be a good option.

Egg cartons are very thin, and they don't have the capability to add density and mass to the cardboard box.

So, I'll not recommend you to consider egg carton to soundproof a cardboard box.

2. Can I Soundproof my Box from Outside?

The simple answer is "WHY NOT"?

What is wrong in it?

Just follow the same process as mentioned above, and you'll achieve the optimum result.

In fact, it will be a good way to soundproof cardboard in case the box is too small.

The only thing you'll need to compromise is the look of the cardboard.

It may not have a normal look:)

3. Can I use Acoustic Foam instead of Sound Deadening Materials?

Though you can use acoustic foam still I'll not recommend it.

Personally, I feel as well as have experienced that the sound deadening materials that I've recommended will give a great result on a budget.

There is no harm in using acoustic foam.

Technically, you can go ahead with it, but from a business point of view, it may not be the right approach towards soundproofing cardboard.

In case, you've soundproof your cardboard with the acoustic foam, I would love to hear your experience.

4. Can I use my cardboard box to convey food?

Definitely, you can :)

Let's end the questionnaire session with a smile:)

Wrapping Up:

I hope you'll agree with me that the steps are quite easy, and anyone can perform it without any professional help.

Once you're done with soundproofing the cardboard box, you can place the microphone inside the box and be a part of the mindboggling experience.

The best thing about this cardboard is that you can customize them as per your needs.

You can even add an additional layer of sound-deadening materials from outside for optimum result.

Once you've got a hands-on experience with soundproofing the cardboard, rest can be done as per your requirement, and the good news is that you don't need professional help.

Last but not least, please share this piece of information with the one who is in need of it.

It makes sense, right?

In case, you think I've missed anything, please let me know in the comment section.
