How To Soundproof A Treadmill Effectively

The treadmill has become the part and parcel of our life. Frankly speaking, I can't imagine my life without a treadmill. It is one of the well-known instrument used for exercise with tons of benefits.

But today we aren't gonna talk about the treadmill benefits rather we will dig into the reasons responsible for treadmill noise and, the ways to deal with it.

It becomes more of a problem than an asset when it starts creating loud and irritating noise.

If you are using the treadmill in an apartment, then the unwanted loud noise can be a troublesome experience for many others.

To reach out to the solution, first, we will have to dig into the reasons that are responsible for the treadmill noise.

Causes of noisy treadmill sounds

There are numerous reasons that can create unwanted treadmill noise. It isn't possible for us to discuss all the reasons in detail. So, we will be discussing some of the common reasons.
  • Treadmill belt NOT adjusted properly: If the treadmill belt is not adjusted as per the user manual, then it will lead to unwanted noise. Have a look at the belts before you start running or walking on the treadmill.
  • Treadmill motor may be clogged: This is a very common problem in the old treadmills. With the passage of time, there is a high probability that the motor will be clogged with the debris and, if the treadmill motor is not cleaned on a regular interval, then the noise will become louder and louder.
  • Treadmill components failure: Well, this is something that can happen with any mechanical device, be it a car, a truck and so on. Keeping a track of the key components and, figuring out the problem at the initial stage can make the problem less complex. Proper maintenance can NOT only improve the performance BUT also increases the lifespan of the treadmill.
If the aforementioned reasons aren't the one making a loud noise, then you can follow the mentioned tips and tricks to completely neutralize the treadmill noise.

Best Way To Reduce Treadmill Noise And Vibration

1. Use Treadmill Rubber Mat: The first thing that I usually recommend to my client, who has a problem with the treadmill in terms of noise is Rubber Mat.
Trust me, investing in the rubber mat can make a lot of difference.

Even though your treadmill doesn't have a loud noise problem, I will recommend you to use Rubber Mat.

Definitely, it makes the treadmill quieter, but it has other benefits also.

One of the benefits that you can't ignore is that it protects your leg from any mechanical failure. At the same time, it also reduces vibrations.

Now, the question arises, which rubber mat should we buy?

A lot of companies talk very high on the rubber mat, but when it comes to the performance, there is a huge gap between the claim and the end result. Anyways, there are few exceptions that have been consistently setting up new benchmarks.

I personally use Rubber-Cal Treadmill Mat. It can withstand the Abrasive environment and, also absorbs vibration to protect fitness equipment and home floor from scratches and damage.

2. Relocate your treadmill: In fact, it is an innovative solution and, the best part is that you resolve the treadmill noise problem without even spending a penny.

If you have placed the treadmill on a wooden or concrete floor, then it is natural that the treadmill will make unwanted noise. One of the cost-effective ways is to place the treadmill on a soft material such as a carpet. Even placing the treadmill on a soundproof blanket or curtain can drastically reduce the noise.

The thicker the carpet the better will the noise absorbing capability.

3. Use a treadmill isolation pads: These pads are specifically manufactured to reduce the treadmill noise. It is perhaps the best solution when it comes to reducing unwanted noise.

I didn't have a good experience with the first few isolation pads that I bought for my treadmill. I was really pissed off with the performance of these isolation pads.

Later, one of my staff suggested me to try PneumaticPlus and, the product is so good that I am still using it.

There isn't any doubt that it is value for money product. The thing that I really loved about this isolation pad is that it delivered as per the BIG claim made by the manufacturers.

Before buying it, I was a bit skeptical with the high claims that this product makes, but I am very happy to share with you that stand tall against my expectation.

You can easily use these isolation pads. All you need to do is to place them under each corner of the treadmill.

Trust me, it works and, you can see the result instantly.

4. Optimum treadmill positioning: I generally suggest this option to the house and apartment owners. Definitely, this is not a feasible option for the commercial gym.

If you are the one using a treadmill from quite a few time, then you will agree with me that the position at which you will put the treadmill will greatly impact the amount of noise that you will hear outside your apartment.

The trick is very innovative, yet simple. You have to place the treadmill in the center of the room and, away from the walls. Ensure that there aren't many hard objects such as furniture in the vicinity of the treadmill.

It may sound weird, but it literally works.

If you are placing a noisy treadmill near the wall, then the noise will bounce back from the wall creating problems such as reverbs, vibrations, and echoes.

So, be careful, and you can take this as a bonus tip.

5. Routine Maintenance: Be it a car, two-wheeler or any other mechanical device, most of you will agree with me that we either ignore the routine maintenance or we delay it. Unfortunately, in both the cases, the treadmill will go for a TOSS.

Regular maintenance can keep the treadmill running normally and smoothly.

If you have scheduled routine maintenance for your treadmill, then I will recommend you to follow the process that I have been following over a period of time.
  • Properly clean the treadmill motor and, cross-check for the unwanted noise
  • Provide lubrication to the belts
  • Make sure that the belts aren't loose.
6. Treadmill anti-vibration pads:

An important side-effect of a noisy treadmill is the vibration. The louder the treadmill the more will it vibrate. Vibration in itself is NOT something to boast about. It is highly recommended to try anti-vibration pads.

I use the same vibration pads for a treadmill that I use for my washing machine. This vibration-pad can also be used for the dryers. It reduces the vibration drastically.

7. Get a quieter treadmill: This is the easiest thing to do. I will recommend you to go for this option only if you have already tried all the six tips mentioned above and, there isn't any progress.

There are many quiet treadmills available in the market and, depending upon your budget and requirement, you can buy one.

At times, people get confused because of the large variant of product available in the market.

To help my readers in taking a smart buying decision, I have written a detailed article on the best quiet treadmills and, also I have mentioned the important criteria that you need to consider while buying a quiet treadmill.
