How can I soundproof sliding double doors in my apartment?

Well, I come with a decade of experience in soundproofing domain, and during these years, I have found quite a good number of people suffering from the aforementioned problem.

There are many solutions available in the market. Some are more expensive yet effective than the budget-friendly solutions.

Depending upon your requirement and your budget, you can select one or many of these solutions.

I always recommend using a mix of the solution because I can assure you that they give the best output. I'm not blabbering but saying on the basis of my past experience.

The success of soundproofing sliding double doors largely depends upon your ability to block the space between the bottom of the door and the floor. Even though the double doors are properly installed there will definitely be some space for the air to perform to and fro movement.

At times, gaps and cracks NOT visible by our naked eyes are the main spoiler. If you are thinking there will be a lot of costs involved in closing the small gaps, then let me tell you that it won't cost you even 10 bucks. Yup, you heard it right. However, we will try to touch all the points that can help you either soundproof a sliding double door or enhance the noise dampening capabilities of an existing soundproof door.

To be honest, soundproofing a sliding door is tedious as well as a challenging job as compared to a solid core door. However, we will try to help you with the solution that will be economical and less time-consuming.

If you have a scarcity of time, then it's better to hire a soundproof consultant for this job.

As mentioned in my earlier article, using a laminated glass is a great way to prevent more than 75 percent of the noise from entering the room.

If you are using a glass door which has a thin glass then even achieving a 70 percent reduction in the noise will be a challenging task.

It's really easy for the noise to exploit the opportunity that comes in the form of thin glass and gap.

1. Hang Curtains that will absorb the noise

I will recommend you to try soundproofing drapes because these drapes are highly economical and efficient at absorbing noise and reducing echo.

The sound dampening capability of the soundproofing drapes is directly proportional to the thickness and density.

There are a wide variety of soundproof curtains available on the market. However, I will recommend you to buy the one that has grommets installed in it.

It may cost you a few more bucks but it's worth the investment. Trust me, it will save a lot of your time. Buying a curtain and then installing the grommets isn't an easy task and if you find it easy then you may find it time-consuming.

These curtains are easy to install and I will recommend you to hang the curtain in the front as well as the back of the sliding double doors.

If you are waiting for my recommendation, then I will advise you to go with Nicetown Full Shading. The unique thing about this curtain is that it is a multi-layer curtain, and also absorbs noise two times higher than the ordinary 1-layer curtain.

2. Use Moving Blankets

I have tried a few types of blankets but the one that grabs my attention was the "moving blanket". These blankets are literally thick and dense.

The main use of these blankets is to safeguard the furniture and household appliances during transportation. However, due to the weight, mass, and cheap price these blankets became very popular among the people of America.

The sound deadening capabilities of the sliding doors can be enhanced by covering them with the sound deadening blankets.

I have tried quite a few of them but the one that I still use is Sure-Max. Without any hesitation, you can try this blanket. Trust me, it's a value for money product.

3. Hang Thick Carpet Rugs

If you aren't used to hanging thick blankets on the sliding glass door then you can try thick carpet as an alternative.

The golden rule is the thicker the carpet the better is the result. However, if you failed to cover the entire sliding door with the thick carpet then you may not get the expected result.

I consider it one of the cheapest and fastest do-it-yourself sound dampening approach.

The output is tangible and you can feel the difference instantly after you hang the thick carpet rugs all over the sliding door.

4. Block the Gaps and the Cracks

The gaps and cracks are the main spoilers. They should be handled correctly for the optimum result.

The gaps between the door frame and the door should be completely blocked. Failing to do so can result in unwanted noise exploiting those small spaces.

There is no doubt that this is a tedious process. However, once you start the process I am sure you will stop only after sealing the gaps.

There are many ways to block these gaps. I personally prefer weatherstrips. They are effective as well as economical.

5. Properly installing the Sliding Doors

If you are a newbie and it is the first time you are installing a sliding door then I will advise you to take help of a professional.

By installing the sliding door correctly half of your work is done. If the door isn't installed correctly then it may lead to gaps and cracks which can be further exploited by the noise.

So, it is one of the most important processes and the outcome should be highly accurate.

6. Install a Sound Deadening Door Sweep

I always recommend my clients to install sound deadening door sweep. It enhances the soundproofing capability of a sliding door. It completely blocks the noise coming through the bottom of the door.

Some other benefits include improvement in the insulating quotient of the door and preventing the insects from entering the room via the sliding door.

Wrapping Up:

I hope these tips will help my readers to soundproof a sliding door. These are some of the basic things that you can start with. You can expect the best result if you are using two or more of these methods simultaneously.

Don't forget to share your feedback. We will be more than happy to know the tips and tricks that you use to soundproof a sliding door.
